Jukka Nykänen

Pianist, arranger and composer Jukka Nykänen (b. 1976 in Helsinki, Finland) studied piano at the Espoo Music Institute with Kata Nummi and at the Sibelius Academy with Teppo Koivisto. His studies also included composition, keyboard harmony and lied. He graduated in 2004 and had his debut recital in 2006. He has also attended masterclasses by Konstantin Bogino, Matti Raekallio, Liisa Pohjola and Pascal Devoyon.

Nykänen is a very versatile musician and performing artist. As a solo pianist he is known for his own arrangements based on themes from musicals, movies, tv-shows and folk songs. His first solo album Pianovirtuoso (2007) got excellent reviews and was chosen one the best albums of 2007 by the biggest newspaper in Finland (Helsingin Sanomat). The second album Kotimaani (Piano Wizard) was released in 2012 and has also been praised by critics.

Nykänen has worked a lot with singers and orchestras and in radio, tv, opera, ballet and theatre. His theatre projects include e.g. Les Misérables, Evita, Miss Saigon, Producers, Mary Poppins and Wicked. He has also composed music for several theatre pieces, including a full musical Houdini, premiering in December 2014.

Nykänen has performed in e.g. Espoo International Piano Festival, Kuhmo Chamber Music, Turku Msic Festival, Mänttä Music Festival and LuostoClassic. He has also performed in Germany and United States.
