Petri Bäckström


Petri Bäckström made his operatic debut in 2000, followed by the National Opera (2001) and the Savonlinna Opera Festival (2003). In addition, he frequently visits the leading opera venues in Finland. Petri Bäckström is a Timo Mustakallio Competition and Lappeenranta Singing Competition finalist. He studied singing at the Sibelius Academy (2000-2004).

He has studied opera singing in Rome (Renato Federighi), Vienna (Irina Gavrilovici), London (David Harper) and Hamburg (Anna Bergamo). Bäckström won the 2nd prize in the Finnish National Ballroom Dancing Championships in 1994.

Petri´s repertoire ranges from classical opera to contemporary music. He has worked in theatres all over Finland, as well as in independent theatre and mixed art forms. Petri has worked with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leif Segerstam, Hannu Lintu, Michael Güttler, Cornelius Meister, Susanna Mälkki, Marco Marelli and Jan Latham-König. He was the Artistic Director of the independent opera group Ooppera Skaala in 2010-2013.
