Lecture: Clara Schumann – Pianist, composer and mother

Clara Schumann – Pianist, Composer and Mother At a time, when women seldom had a chance to develop their musical talent very far, pianist Clara Schumann (1819-1896) did get a exceptionally good education and had a career of over 60 years as a performing artist. As a young girl, she wrote a lot of music, for instance a piano concerto. For a long time she was known only as composer Robert Schumann’s wife and his self-sacrificing muse. Clara Schumann overlived her husband by 40 years, and she was famous for her reputation as an uncompromising artist. Contemporary research has found out, however, that Clara Schumann was a very ambiguous figure, because the fate of her eight children was tragic. For Clara, giving concerts was also a way to escape the problems at home.
